Prosopis

What is Prosopis?

Prosopis, commonly known as mesquite, is a hardy shrub or small tree found in arid regions, including parts of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Known for its drought tolerance, the tree produces seed pods that are often used as livestock feed and in some culinary applications. However, its thorny branches and strong root system make it invasive in some areas.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Mesquite trees release significant amounts of pollen, especially during spring, which can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. The pollen can cause respiratory symptoms, including itchy eyes, congestion, and asthma exacerbations. For some people, exposure to the wood or smoke from burning mesquite can also cause skin irritation or respiratory issues.

What can I do about it?

To manage mesquite-related allergies, limit time spent outdoors when the trees are flowering. Avoid burning mesquite wood if you experience respiratory symptoms, as the smoke can worsen allergies. Using air purifiers, keeping windows closed, and using over-the-counter allergy medications can help reduce symptoms.
