Thyme

What is Thyme?

Thyme essential oil is distilled from the Thymus vulgaris plant, a herbaceous shrub native to the Mediterranean region. It has a strong, herbaceous aroma and is known for its potent antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In aromatherapy, Thyme oil is used to support respiratory health, stimulate circulation, and uplift the mood, as well as to ease muscle pain and tension.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Thyme essential oil contains thymol and carvacrol, compounds that can cause skin sensitivity or respiratory irritation, especially for those with delicate skin or respiratory systems. Its strong scent may be overwhelming for those with sensitivity to herbal aromas, potentially causing headaches or nausea.

What can I do about it?

To manage intolerance to Thyme, dilute it thoroughly with a carrier oil before applying to the skin, as this reduces the likelihood of irritation. When using in a diffuser, blend it with softer oils like lavender or citrus to mellow its intensity. Using it in small quantities and in a well-ventilated space can help you enjoy its benefits without discomfort.
