Isododecane
What is Isododecane?
Isododecane is a lightweight, non-greasy hydrocarbon commonly found in cosmetics, especially long-wear makeup products. Its unique texture and evaporative properties make it ideal for creating a smooth finish that helps makeup last longer. In products like foundations, primers, and lip colors, isododecane allows formulations to dry quickly and adhere well to the skin without a sticky feel.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Some people experience dryness, flaking, or even irritation from isododecane. Because it’s quick to evaporate, it can sometimes leave skin feeling stripped or dry, especially in those with already sensitive or dry skin. Individuals with conditions like eczema may be more susceptible to dryness when using products containing isododecane.
What can I do about it?
If you find isododecane drying, try moisturizing thoroughly before applying products that contain it. Option for makeup and skincare items that don’t include this ingredient and instead use moisturizing alternatives, like squalane or jojoba oil, which offer a more hydrating, barrier-supportive effect. Checking product labels for isododecane-free options can also help reduce irritation and dryness.
