5-HTP
What is 5-HTP?
5-HTP, or 5-hydroxytryptophan, is a naturally occurring amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation. It is commonly taken as a supplement to improve mood, reduce anxiety, and support sleep. 5-HTP is often derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Some individuals may experience intolerance to 5-HTP, leading to symptoms like gastrointestinal upset, nausea, or headaches. These reactions may occur if taken in high doses or if the individual has sensitivity to serotonin-related compounds.
What can I do about it?
If you suspect an intolerance, consider reducing the dosage or discontinuing 5-HTP. Alternatives like L-tryptophan or St. John’s wort may offer similar mood-supporting benefits without the associated side effects. Gradual reintroduction can help assess your tolerance.
