Budgerigar

What is Budgerigar?

Budgerigars, commonly known as budgies or parakeets, are small, colorful birds often kept as pets. While they are beloved for their playful nature and chirping, budgerigars, like all birds, produce allergens found in their feathers, droppings, and dander. These particles can become airborne and cause allergic reactions in people sensitive to bird allergens.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Budgerigars, like other pet birds, produce allergens in their skin cells (dander), feathers, and feces. When these allergens are inhaled, they can trigger immune system responses in people with bird allergies. Symptoms may include sneezing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, and respiratory issues. People who handle budgies regularly or live in close proximity to them may be more likely to develop these sensitivities.

What can I do about it?

To reduce exposure, consider keeping budgerigar cages in well-ventilated areas and away from bedrooms. Regular cleaning of the cage, wearing gloves when handling the bird, and washing hands thoroughly afterward can help minimize allergen spread. Using air purifiers in the room where the budgie is kept can further reduce airborne particles.
