Butterfish

What is Butterfish?

Butterfish is a small, oily fish known for its rich, buttery flavor and tender flesh. It’s often found in the Atlantic Ocean and is popular in various cuisines, grilled or fried. Its high-fat content contributes to its smooth texture.

Why do I have an intolerance to it?

Intolerance to butterfish may stem from its oil content, particularly gempylotoxin, a substance that can cause digestive issues in some people. This oily substance is indigestible by humans and can result in diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal cramps, a condition known as "keriorrhea."

What can I do about it?

To manage butterfish intolerance, it’s important to avoid consuming the fish or reduce portions to lessen the impact of its oils. If symptoms occur, hydration and over-the-counter medications may help manage digestive discomfort. Choosing lower-fat fish varieties can also prevent reactions.
