Cardamom (Essential Oil)

What is Cardamom? (Essential Oil)

Cardamom essential oil is a concentrated oil extracted from the seeds of the cardamom plant (Elettaria cardamomum) through steam distillation. Known for its warm, sweet, and slightly spicy aroma, it is widely used in aromatherapy, cooking, and traditional medicine

Why do I have an intolerance?

An intolerance to cardamom essential oil could be caused by the following reasons:

  1. High Potency: Cardamom essential oil is highly concentrated, and its strong compounds (like cineole and terpinyl acetate) may irritate sensitive individuals.

  2. Skin Sensitivity: If not diluted properly, it can cause irritation, redness, or inflammation, especially on sensitive or reactive skin.

  3. Allergic Reaction: You may be allergic to cardamom or its components, leading to symptoms like itching, rashes, or discomfort.

  4. Respiratory Sensitivity: Its strong aroma might trigger respiratory discomfort or headaches in sensitive individuals.

  5. Cross-Reactivity: If you’re allergic to other spices or essential oils, you might react to cardamom oil due to shared compounds.

  6. Additives or Contaminants: Low-quality or adulterated oils may contain impurities that provoke reactions.

What can I do about it?

If you experience symptoms, stop using cardamom essential oil immediately, ensure proper dilution with a carrier oil, perform a patch test before wider use, or take a test to identify triggers and explore alternatives.
