What is Carp?
Carp is a freshwater fish, commonly found in rivers and lakes, with a mild flavor and firm texture. It is popular in Eastern European and Asian cuisines and is typically baked, fried, or included in soups.
Why do I have an intolerance to it?
Intolerance to carp could be linked to fish proteins, such as parvalbumin, which can cause adverse immune responses in sensitive individuals. These reactions may range from mild stomach upset to more severe allergic symptoms like swelling or difficulty breathing.
What can I do about it?
Avoiding carp and any fish that might cross-react with it is the best strategy. If symptoms are mild, antihistamines can help. In severe cases, carrying an epinephrine injector is advised. Checking for fish derivatives in processed foods can also help manage this intolerance.
