Chamomile, German

What is Chamomile, German?

German chamomile oil is extracted from Matricaria chamomilla, recognized by its deep blue color due to the presence of chamazulene, a compound known for anti-inflammatory properties. This essential oil is prized in aromatherapy and skincare, especially for calming sensitive or irritated skin and soothing stress. It’s commonly used to promote relaxation and support skin health.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to German chamomile may stem from sensitivities to its active components, particularly chamazulene and bisabolol. While these compounds are generally well-tolerated, in some individuals, they can trigger skin irritation, mild respiratory discomfort, or even allergic reactions. Those with sensitivities to other daisy family plants may experience a similar reaction to German chamomile.

What can I do about it?

If you’re experiencing discomfort, consider diluting German chamomile oil further with a carrier oil or reducing its application frequency. Another approach is to explore alternative soothing oils, such as lavender or Roman chamomile, which may provide similar calming benefits but with different active ingredients. Gradual reintroduction, if desired, can also help assess tolerance levels.
