Citronella

What is Citronella?

Citronella essential oil is extracted from the leaves and stems of the Cymbopogon nardus and Cymbopogon winterianus plants. Widely recognized for its fresh, lemony scent, citronella is commonly used as a natural insect repellent. It’s also employed in aromatherapy for its uplifting and refreshing qualities.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to citronella essential oil may stem from its high citral content, which can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Symptoms may include redness, itching, or a burning sensation when the oil is applied to the skin, especially for those with pre-existing sensitivities to citrus or grassy aromas.

What can I do about it?

To manage intolerance to citronella essential oil, refrain from applying it directly to the skin. Instead, utilize it in a diffuser for a pleasant aroma and to repel insects in an enclosed space. If looking for alternatives for outdoor use, consider other natural insect repellents that do not cause irritation.
