What is Evaporated cow's milk?
Evaporated cow's milk is a form of milk with about 60% of its water content removed, resulting in a thicker consistency. It’s often used in baking, cooking, or as a creamy addition to beverages. It retains the flavor and nutrients of regular cow’s milk, but with a richer and creamier texture.
Why do I have an intolerance to it?
Evaporated milk, like regular cow's milk, contains lactose and milk proteins. Those with lactose intolerance may struggle to digest evaporated milk due to its lactose content, causing bloating and discomfort. Additionally, some individuals may have a sensitivity to casein or whey proteins, leading to digestive issues or allergic reactions.
What can I do about it?
For those intolerant to evaporated milk, lactose-free or plant-based alternatives like evaporated coconut or almond milk are good substitutes. Lactase enzyme supplements can help digest lactose, while individuals with protein sensitivities should avoid dairy altogether and opt for non-dairy milk alternatives to prevent discomfort.
