Dimethicone

What is Dimethicone?

Dimethicone is a silicone-based ingredient commonly used in skincare and cosmetic products for its smoothing and protective qualities. It acts as an emollient, filling in fine lines and providing a silky feel to the skin, making it popular in moisturizers, primers, and lotions. Dimethicone also forms a protective layer on the skin, helping to lock in moisture and shield it from environmental irritants.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Some people may experience intolerance to dimethicone, especially those prone to clogged pores or breakouts. The occlusive nature of dimethicone can create a barrier that may trap dirt and oils, leading to congestion and, in some cases, acne.

What can I do about it?

If you find that dimethicone doesn’t work well with your skin, look for silicone-free products with alternatives like squalane or hyaluronic acid for similar moisturizing effects. Always check for “non-comedogenic” labels to ensure the formula won’t clog pores, and choose lightweight moisturizers if you have oily or acne-prone skin.
