What is Doxycycline?
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used in treating bacterial infections and inflammatory conditions like acne and rosacea. In skincare, it is effective for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, reducing acne lesions and preventing further breakouts. Doxycycline is typically taken orally and is prescribed for moderate to severe acne that doesn’t respond to topical treatments alone.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Some individuals may experience intolerance to doxycycline, particularly through digestive upset, sensitivity to sunlight, or allergic reactions. Common side effects include nausea, stomach discomfort, or increased susceptibility to sunburn, especially in fair-skinned individuals.
What can I do about it?
If you experience intolerance to doxycycline, consult with your provider about alternative medications like erythromycin or clindamycin, which may be better tolerated. Additionally, taking doxycycline with food and avoiding sun exposure can reduce side effects. If an oral antibiotic isn't suitable, topical treatments like benzoyl peroxide or retinoids may offer similar acne-fighting benefits with fewer systemic side effects.
