E103 Alkanet or Alkannin
What is Alkanet?
Alkanet is a natural coloring agent derived from the root of the Alkanna tinctoria plant. Alkannin, its main pigment, is primarily used for coloring cosmetics and some food items, providing a deep red or reddish-yellow hue in certain products.
Why do I have an intolerance to it?
Intolerance to alkanet or alkannin can result from sensitivity to plant-derived compounds, which can cause digestive upset or allergic reactions like skin rashes or irritation. This intolerance is often due to the immune system identifying the pigment as a foreign substance, triggering a response.
What can I do about it?
If alkanet causes discomfort, try to avoid foods or cosmetics that list it as an ingredient. Since it’s less commonly found in foods, focus on cosmetics and natural dyes when choosing products. Seek alternatives, such as synthetic colorants or other plant-based dyes that are less likely to cause reactions.
