E142 Green S
What is E142 Green S?
E142, also known as Green S, is a synthetic green dye used in the food and beverage industry. It is often added to confectionery, desserts, and canned vegetables to give them a green hue. E142 is a coal tar derivative, which makes it less favored in countries that prefer natural colorants.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Green S intolerance could be due to sensitivity to synthetic compounds. The dye is not naturally derived, which may lead to the body reacting negatively, causing symptoms like hives, gastrointestinal distress, or even exacerbating conditions like asthma or hyperactivity in susceptible individuals.
What can I do about it?
To manage this intolerance, check food labels for E142 and avoid products containing it. There are many natural alternatives, such as spinach or spirulina extracts, which can be used to achieve green coloring in foods. Opting for organic or naturally colored products can help prevent adverse reactions.
