E150D Caramel IV
What is E150D Caramel IV?
E150D, or Sulfite Ammonia Caramel, is the darkest form of caramel coloring, produced by heating sugars with both ammonia and sulfites. It is widely used in soft drinks, particularly colas, as well as in dark beers and sauces. This type of caramel is one of the most common food colorings in processed products.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to E150D is typically linked to the presence of sulfites and ammonia, both of which can provoke allergic reactions or gastrointestinal symptoms in sensitive individuals. Sulfites, in particular, are a known allergen that can trigger respiratory issues, especially in those with asthma.
What can I do about it?
If you suspect intolerance to E150D, avoid soft drinks and other processed foods that list it as an ingredient. Instead, opt for beverages and products that use natural coloring methods, such as those relying on molasses or burnt sugar. Many brands now offer cleaner alternatives free from synthetic additives.
