E151 Brilliant Black
What is E151 Brilliant Black?
E151, also known as Brilliant Black BN, is a synthetic black dye used in a range of food products, especially candies, licorice, and soft drinks. It gives a deep black color and is often used in small quantities to create dark shades in food coloring.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to Brilliant Black may occur due to its synthetic origin. Some individuals react negatively to artificial dyes, leading to symptoms like skin reactions, digestive problems, or even respiratory issues. The body’s immune system may recognize E151 as a foreign substance and mount an allergic-like response.
What can I do about it?
Avoid products containing E151 by carefully reading ingredient lists. Look for foods that use natural black colorants, such as activated charcoal or squid ink, as alternatives. Many organic and all-natural brands now avoid synthetic dyes altogether, providing safer options for those with sensitivities.
