E153 Carbon Black or Vegetable Carbon
What is E153 Carbon Black or Vegetable Carbon?
E153, also known as Carbon Black or Vegetable Carbon, is a natural black pigment made from carbonized plant materials, such as wood or coconut shells. It’s used in products like licorice, icing, and various confectioneries to provide a dark black color.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Though E153 is derived from natural sources, some individuals may develop an intolerance due to its high carbon content. This could lead to digestive upset or other mild symptoms, especially when consumed in large quantities. Some people may also have difficulty processing carbon-based substances.
What can I do about it?
To minimize intolerance symptoms, reduce intake of foods containing E153. Opt for naturally colored alternatives that do not rely on carbon black for coloring. Reading labels and choosing foods made with minimal additives will help prevent adverse reactions.
