E304 Ascorbyl palmitate
What is E304 or Ascorbyl palmitate?
E304, or ascorbyl palmitate, is a fat-soluble derivative of ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and palmitic acid. It's often used as an antioxidant in fats and oils to prevent rancidity. Its fat-soluble nature makes it ideal for use in processed foods containing fats, such as snack foods and baked goods.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to ascorbyl palmitate can be related to sensitivity to either the ascorbic acid or the palmitic acid component. Symptoms might include digestive disturbances, such as gas or diarrhea, or skin reactions. In rare cases, excessive intake of palmitic acid may contribute to
cholesterol imbalances, which could worsen symptoms.
What can I do about it?
If you suspect an intolerance to E304, avoid foods high in processed fats and oils, as they are more likely to contain ascorbyl palmitate. Opt for fresh, minimally processed foods, and be vigilant about reading product labels to identify potential sources of this additive.
