E329 Magnesium lactate
What is E329 or Magnesium lactate?
Magnesium lactate (E329) is the magnesium salt of lactic acid, used as an acidity regulator and preservative in processed foods. It is often added to dairy products, canned goods, and baked items to maintain freshness, improve texture, and extend shelf life. Magnesium lactate is also used for magnesium fortification in some foods.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to magnesium lactate can result from sensitivity to magnesium compounds or difficulty in metabolizing lactic acid. This can lead to digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. In some cases, an imbalance of magnesium in the body can exacerbate these symptoms, causing discomfort.
What can I do about it?
Avoiding products with magnesium lactate is crucial if you have an intolerance. Be sure to read ingredient lists carefully and choose foods that are free from E329. Opt for products that promote their preservative-free status or those made with minimal additives, as these are less likely to contain magnesium lactate.
