E473 Sucrose esters of fatty acids
What is Sucrose esters of fatty acids (E473)?
E473 is an emulsifier created by combining sucrose (sugar) with fatty acids. It helps mix ingredients that typically don’t combine, such as water and oil. It is commonly found in ice creams, margarine, and some confectioneries, contributing to a smooth texture and stability.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to E473 could arise from sensitivity to the fatty acids or sucrose used in its production. Some people may struggle to digest these compounds, which could lead to gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea or stomach cramps. Additionally, the body may react to the chemical modification of natural ingredients in the emulsifier.
What can I do about it?
To manage intolerance, try reducing or eliminating processed foods containing E473. Reading food labels carefully will help you identify which products contain this additive. Opting for homemade versions of common processed foods may reduce symptoms. It may also help to keep a record of your symptoms to better understand how your body reacts.
