E554 Sodium aluminosilicate
What is Sodium aluminosilicate (E554)?
Sodium aluminosilicate (E554) is an anti-caking agent used in powdered foods, such as table salt and powdered milk. It helps to absorb excess moisture, preventing clumping and maintaining the product's texture. This additive is composed of sodium, aluminium, and silicate minerals and is commonly used in food manufacturing.
Why do I have an intolerance?
People who are intolerant to sodium aluminosilicate may react to the aluminium or silicate content. Symptoms of intolerance can include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as bloating or stomach cramps, after consuming foods that contain this additive. Sensitivity to mineral-based additives, particularly aluminium, is often the root cause of these reactions.
What can I do about it?
To avoid symptoms, it is best to avoid products containing sodium aluminosilicate. Opt for natural or organic alternatives, which typically do not use this additive. Reading ingredient labels closely will help you identify foods that are free from anti-caking agents like E554.
