E710 Spiramycins

What is Spiramycin (E710)?

Spiramycin is a macrolide antibiotic that is primarily used to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory infections, toxoplasmosis, and other conditions caused by susceptible bacteria. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis in bacteria, effectively stopping their growth. Spiramycin is commonly used in veterinary medicine but is also applied in certain human cases, particularly where other antibiotics may not be suitable.

Why do I have an intolerance?

An intolerance to spiramycin may develop if your immune system reacts negatively to the drug or if your body has difficulty metabolizing it. Some people experience gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, due to spiramycin. In rare cases, allergic reactions like rashes, swelling, or breathing difficulties may occur, signaling a hypersensitivity to the antibiotic.

What can I do about it?

To manage spiramycin intolerance, you can avoid taking it in the future and inform others in case the antibiotic is suggested again. If you are currently experiencing side effects, over-the-counter remedies like antacids may help manage mild gastrointestinal symptoms. Staying hydrated and maintaining a light diet can also reduce discomfort. However, it’s important to seek alternatives to spiramycin in future treatments.
