Our Testing Process
E944 Propane
What is Propane (E944)?
E944, or propane, is a colorless gas used as a propellant in food products like cooking sprays and aerosol whipped cream. It helps expel the product from containers and is also used in food packaging to prolong the shelf life by displacing oxygen and preventing oxidation.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Propane intolerance may occur when the body reacts to the small amounts of gas that could be inhaled or ingested from aerosolized food products. Symptoms could include nausea, headaches, or respiratory issues, particularly if you are sensitive to inhalants or have pre-existing conditions like asthma.
What can I do about it?
To manage intolerance, avoiding products that use propane as a propellant is recommended. This includes many aerosol-based cooking sprays and whipped creams. Look for alternatives that use mechanical pumps or simply use fresh ingredients, such as oil or butter in place of sprays.
