Elemi

What is Elemi?

Elemi essential oil is extracted from the resin of the Canarium luzonicum tree, native to the Philippines. It has a fresh, citrusy, and slightly spicy aroma and is known for its grounding and uplifting effects in aromatherapy. Elemi oil is commonly used for meditation and mental clarity, as well as for skin care due to its soothing and rejuvenating properties.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to elemi essential oil may be due to its resinous compounds, which can be sensitizing to some people’s skin and respiratory systems. Individuals sensitive to tree resins or strong citrus-spice aromas might find elemi oil too intense, especially in concentrated applications, leading to mild irritation or discomfort.

What can I do about it?

If elemi essential oil causes sensitivity, try diluting it more thoroughly or using it in diffusers at lower concentrations. Oils like frankincense or myrrh can offer a similar grounding and meditative quality with a softer aroma, making them gentle alternatives for those with sensitivities to elemi.
