Erucic Acid (omega 9)

What is Erucic acid?

Erucic acid is a type of omega-9 fatty acid predominantly found in certain plant oils, particularly mustard oil and rapeseed oil (canola). Unlike omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, omega-9 is not essential because the body can produce it. However, it still plays a role in maintaining heart health and lowering inflammation when consumed in moderation.


Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to erucic acid may arise if your body has difficulty digesting or metabolizing fats. People with sensitivities to mustard or rapeseed oil may also react to erucic acid, leading to symptoms such as nausea, indigestion, or gastrointestinal discomfort. Additionally, higher levels of erucic acid have been associated with potential heart issues in very high doses, which may exacerbate intolerance symptoms.


What can I do about it?

To manage an intolerance to erucic acid, you can reduce or eliminate the consumption of oils and foods containing high levels of this fatty acid, such as mustard oil or rapeseed oil. Switching to other cooking oils like olive oil, which is lower in erucic acid, may help alleviate symptoms. Monitoring your overall fat intake and ensuring a balance of different types of fats in your diet can also improve tolerance.
