Furniture coatings (generic)

What is Furniture coating?

Furniture coatings are finishes applied to wooden furniture to protect and enhance its appearance. Common coatings include paints, stains, and sealants, which often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other chemicals. These coatings provide durability and aesthetic appeal but can release harmful substances into the air as they dry.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to furniture coatings may stem from sensitivity to the VOCs and chemicals released during the drying process. These substances can cause respiratory issues, headaches, or skin irritation, especially in poorly ventilated areas. Prolonged exposure may worsen symptoms and lead to increased sensitivity over time.

What can I do about it?

To minimize exposure, choose furniture products labeled as low-VOC or VOC-free. Ensure adequate ventilation during and after the application of coatings by opening windows and using fans. Additionally, allow newly coated furniture to cure in a well-ventilated area before bringing it into living spaces.
