Golden Hamster

What is Golden Hamster?

Golden hamsters are small, domesticated rodents often kept as pets. Known for their golden-brown fur, they are popular among families for their low maintenance and gentle nature. However, hamsters can produce allergenic proteins in their fur, saliva, and dander, which may trigger allergies in sensitive individuals.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Hamster allergies arise due to proteins present in their fur, skin, saliva, and urine. When these particles become airborne, they can cause allergic reactions, particularly when inhaled or when there is direct skin contact. Symptoms can range from sneezing and itchy eyes to asthma-like respiratory issues, especially if someone frequently handles the hamster or cleans its habitat.

What can I do about it?

Reducing exposure to hamsters can help manage allergy symptoms. If keeping a hamster as a pet, house it in a well-ventilated area, clean its cage regularly, and use an air purifier to reduce allergens in the air. Wearing gloves and washing hands after handling the hamster or cleaning its cage is also beneficial.
