Hops
What is Hops?
Hops essential oil is derived from the flowers of the Humulus lupulus plant, known for its soothing and calming properties. The aroma is earthy, herbal, and slightly bitter, commonly associated with its use in brewing beer. In aromatherapy, hops oil is valued for its potential to relieve stress, improve sleep quality, and reduce anxiety. It contains high levels of myrcene and humulene, compounds known for their sedative and anti-inflammatory effects.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to hops essential oil can stem from its potency and concentration, as the active compounds, including myrcene, can cause skin irritation or respiratory discomfort in sensitive individuals. Some people may react adversely due to individual sensitivities to the plant's chemical profile or prior exposure to allergens in similar herbs or flowers.
What can I do about it?
To mitigate sensitivity, you can dilute hops essential oil with a carrier oil before use, which can help lessen its intensity on the skin or in aromatherapy. Additionally, try using it sparingly in well-ventilated spaces or with a diffuser at a lower concentration to minimize potential respiratory reactions.
