Hydrocortisone

What is Hydrocortisone?

Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid commonly used in topical creams to reduce inflammation, itching, and redness. It is often recommended for conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, allergic reactions, and insect bites. As a mild steroid, hydrocortisone is suitable for short-term use to alleviate symptoms and bring relief to irritated skin.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance or overuse of hydrocortisone can lead to side effects like skin thinning, increased redness, or a worsening of symptoms after discontinuation. Those with sensitive skin may experience stinging or irritation, and prolonged use can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, making it more susceptible to irritation.

What can I do about it?

If you experience intolerance, discontinue use and consider non-steroidal anti-inflammatory options, like aloe vera gel or calendula, which are gentler on the skin. Limit hydrocortisone application to a few days or as directed, and avoid using it on broken skin.
