Hydroquinone

What is Hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent used to treat hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and melasma. It works by inhibiting melanin production in the skin, which gradually lightens the targeted area over time. Hydroquinone is typically available in concentrations of 2% for over-the-counter use and higher percentages with a prescription.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Some individuals may experience sensitivity to hydroquinone, leading to redness, dryness, or irritation. Long-term use or improper application can result in ochronosis, a blue-gray discoloration of the skin. Those with sensitive skin may react more intensely, especially with higher concentrations.

What can I do about it?

If hydroquinone causes irritation, consider alternatives like vitamin C, niacinamide, or kojic acid, which are gentler and also help reduce pigmentation. Limit usage to 12 weeks or as directed to avoid adverse effects, and always follow hydroquinone application with sunscreen, as it can increase sun sensitivity.
