Hyssop

What is Hyssop?

Hyssop essential oil is extracted from the Hyssopus officinalis plant, a small, aromatic shrub native to the Mediterranean. Known for its herbaceous, slightly sweet scent, it’s often used in respiratory and skin care treatments due to its antiseptic, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory properties. The oil contains pinocamphone, which contributes to its energizing and cleansing effects.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to hyssop oil can be due to the presence of pinocamphone, which can be toxic at high doses. This compound may cause skin or respiratory irritation in some individuals, especially when used in high concentrations. People with sensitivities to similar aromatic herbs may also be more susceptible to reactions when exposed to hyssop oil.

What can I do about it?

To manage intolerance, consider using a highly diluted amount of hyssop oil in a carrier oil, particularly for topical applications. Avoid using hyssop in enclosed spaces and consider alternate oils with gentler respiratory properties if the scent or composition triggers discomfort.
