Juniper Berry
What is Juniper Berry?
Juniper berry essential oil comes from the berries of the Juniperus communis plant and has a fresh, woody, slightly sweet scent. Valued for its detoxifying and diuretic properties, this oil is often used in massage and aromatherapy to reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and support kidney health.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Intolerance to juniper berry oil may stem from its high levels of alpha-pinene and other terpenes, which can cause skin or respiratory irritation in sensitive individuals. People who are allergic to other members of the cypress family may also experience reactions to juniper.
What can I do about it?
To minimize the chance of irritation, dilute juniper berry oil significantly before topical use. Using it in a diffuser at a lower concentration can also reduce respiratory discomfort. Blending juniper with lighter oils like chamomile or lavender may make it more tolerable for regular use.
