Kanuka

What is Kanuka?

Kanuka essential oil, extracted from the Kanuka tree (Kunzea ericoides), is native to New Zealand and is known for its refreshing, eucalyptus-like aroma. Rich in compounds like alpha-pinene and cineole, it offers significant antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory benefits. Kanuka oil is commonly used in skincare for treating acne, minor infections, and inflammation, as well as in respiratory care to alleviate congestion. It’s gentler than tea tree oil, which makes it a popular choice for sensitive skin types.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Sensitivity to kanuka oil can arise due to its high concentration of cineole and other bioactive compounds. These compounds, while therapeutic, can sometimes cause irritation, particularly in people with sensitivities to eucalyptus or other essential oils with strong respiratory or antimicrobial profiles. Symptoms may include mild respiratory irritation, skin redness, or discomfort upon inhalation.

What can I do about it?

To reduce intolerance, dilute kanuka oil with a carrier oil like jojoba or coconut before applying it to the skin. For aromatherapy, consider using it in lower concentrations or blending it with gentler oils like lavender or chamomile. This can help soften its potency while preserving its therapeutic effects in both skincare and respiratory support.
