Maize Plant

What is Maize Plant?

Maize, or corn, is a widely grown crop with a tall, sturdy stalk and ears of kernels. It produces significant amounts of pollen during late summer, which can be dispersed by wind. This pollen can be a potent allergen, especially in agricultural areas where maize is cultivated in large quantities.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Maize pollen intolerance occurs when the immune system identifies maize pollen proteins as harmful. This immune reaction can cause hay fever symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, nasal congestion, and coughing. Those with seasonal allergies are more likely to be sensitive to maize pollen.

What can I do about it?

To reduce exposure, avoid areas where maize is grown during the pollination period. Closing windows and using an air purifier can help control pollen levels indoors. For individuals living near maize fields, staying indoors on windy days can be beneficial. After spending time outdoors, washing up and changing clothes can help minimize pollen that may have adhered to skin and clothing.
