Manuka

What is Manuka?

Manuka essential oil is derived from the leaves of the Leptospermum scoparium plant, native to New Zealand. This oil has a warm, sweet, and earthy aroma, known for its powerful antimicrobial properties. Manuka oil is often used in skincare to treat acne, reduce inflammation, and promote healing due to its natural antiseptic qualities.

Why do I have an intolerance?

Intolerance to manuka oil may result from its high levels of various active compounds, which can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. Those with sensitivities to tea tree or related essential oils might also experience adverse effects.

What can I do about it?

To mitigate potential reactions, always dilute manuka oil with a carrier oil before topical application. When using it in aromatherapy, start with lower concentrations in a diffuser to gauge tolerance. Blending it with soothing oils, such as lavender or chamomile, can also help temper its intensity while allowing you to enjoy its therapeutic benefits.
