Milk (Sheep)

What is Sheep Milk?

Sheep milk is a nutrient-rich dairy product obtained from sheep. It is known for its creamy texture and high nutritional value, including higher levels of protein, fat, vitamins, and minerals compared to cow or goat milk. Sheep milk is commonly used to make various cheeses, such as Roquefort, Pecorino, and Manchego, as well as yogurts and other dairy products.

Why Do I Have an Intolerance to Sheep Milk?

Intolerance to sheep milk can occur due to the presence of lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Individuals who are lactose intolerant lack sufficient levels of lactase, the enzyme needed to digest lactose, leading to symptoms like bloating, gas, and diarrhea. Additionally, some people may have an allergic reaction to proteins found in sheep milk, such as casein or whey, resulting in symptoms like hives, itching, and digestive discomfort.

What Can I Do About It?

If you suspect an intolerance to sheep milk, consider switching to lactose-free dairy alternatives or plant-based milk options like almond, soy, or oat milk. Lactase supplements can help manage lactose intolerance by aiding in lactose digestion.

For those with a protein allergy, avoiding sheep milk and products made from it is essential. Reading labels and being aware of potential hidden sources of sheep milk in processed foods can also help manage intolerance.
