Sodium PCA
What is Sodium PCA?
Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, a natural component of the skin’s moisture factor. It is widely used in skincare products for its excellent humectant properties, helping to attract and retain moisture in the skin. Sodium PCA enhances hydration, making it a popular ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and lotions aimed at improving skin texture and appearance.
Why do I have an intolerance?
Sodium PCA is generally well-tolerated, but some individuals may experience mild irritation or an allergic reaction. This sensitivity may be due to underlying skin conditions or a general reaction to the product formulation, especially if it contains multiple active ingredients or fragrances.
What can I do about it?
If you find Sodium PCA irritating, consider using products with lower concentrations or those that contain minimal additional irritants. Look for hydrating products formulated specifically for sensitive skin that prioritize gentle ingredients. If irritation occurs, discontinue use and try alternative humectants like glycerin or aloe vera, which are less likely to provoke a reaction.
