Tequila

What is Tequila?

Tequila is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from the blue agave plant, primarily produced in the area surrounding the city of Tequila in the Jalisco state of Mexico. It is typically consumed straight or used in cocktails such as margaritas. Tequila is known for its unique flavor profile, which ranges from sweet and fruity to spicy and earthy, depending on the production process and aging.

Why Do I Have an Intolerance toTequila?

Intolerance to tequila can stem from several factors. Some individuals may have a sensitivity to alcohol itself, leading to symptoms like nausea, headaches, or digestive discomfort. Others might react to specific compounds in tequila, such as congeners, which are by-products of fermentation and distillation.

Additionally, additives or impurities in lower-quality tequilas can cause adverse reactions. An intolerance can also be related to a deficiency in certain enzymes, such as alcohol dehydrogenase, which are responsible for breaking down alcohol in the body.

What Can I Do About It?

To manage tequila intolerance, avoid consuming tequila and opt for non-alcoholic beverages. Reading labels and choosing high-quality, 100% agave tequila can help reduce exposure to potential irritants, although complete avoidance is the most effective strategy. Hydration and consuming food alongside alcohol can also help mitigate some of the discomfort associated with alcohol intolerance.
