Tumeric (Fresh)

What is Fresh turmeric?

Fresh turmeric is the raw root of the turmeric plant, with a pungent, earthy taste and a vibrant orange color. It is often grated or sliced and used in smoothies, teas, and cooking for its flavor and medicinal properties. Fresh turmeric has a more intense flavor compared to its dried form and is rich in curcumin.

Why do I have an intolerance to it?

Fresh turmeric intolerance may be due to the concentration of curcumin and other compounds, which can upset the stomach or cause nausea in sensitive individuals. Some may also experience skin irritation from handling the root. The intensity of its oils and active ingredients can lead to digestive discomfort, particularly in those with sensitive gastrointestinal systems.

What can I do about it?

If fresh turmeric causes issues, avoid raw or lightly cooked preparations and consider milder spices like ginger as substitutes. Cooked turmeric, used in small amounts, may also be easier on digestion.
