Phosphorus
Why Does a Phosphorus Deficiency Occur?
Phosphorus deficiency occurs when there is insufficient phosphorus intake from the diet or poor absorption in the digestive tract. It can also result from certain medical conditions such as diabetes, alcohol abuse, and hyperparathyroidism, which affect phosphorus metabolism.
Prolonged use of antacids containing aluminum, which binds phosphorus in the gut, can also lead to deficiency. Other contributing factors include kidney disease, which impairs phosphorus retention, and malnutrition. Infants, children, and pregnant women are particularly at risk due to their higher phosphorus needs for growth and development.
What to Do About Phosphorus Deficiency?
Increasing the intake of phosphorus-rich foods such as dairy products, meat, fish, poultry, nuts, seeds, and whole grains can help. It's important to ensure a balanced diet that provides adequate phosphorus. For those with underlying medical conditions, addressing the primary health issue can improve phosphorus levels. In some cases, phosphorus supplements may be necessary.
