What is Wasabi?

Wasabi is a green paste made from the grated root of the wasabi plant, known for its sharp, pungent heat. It's commonly used in Japanese cuisine, particularly with sushi and sashimi, and provides a fiery yet brief spiciness that clears the sinuses. True wasabi is rare, with many commercial versions made from horseradish and mustard.


Why do I have an intolerance to it?

Wasabi intolerance is often due to the compounds that give it its heat, such as allyl isothiocyanate. These can cause a burning sensation in the nose, throat, or stomach, leading to nausea, heartburn, or indigestion in sensitive individuals. Wasabi may also irritate the digestive tract, particularly in those with acid reflux or sensitive stomachs.


What can I do about it?

If you are intolerant to wasabi, avoid foods that contain it or opt for smaller amounts. You can replace it with milder condiments like ginger or a light soy sauce to enhance the flavor of sushi without triggering discomfort.
