Why Biotin Deficiency Occurs?

Biotin deficiency is rare due to its widespread availability in various foods. However, certain factors can lead to deficiency, including prolonged consumption of raw egg whites, which contain avidin that binds biotin and prevents its absorption. Conditions like biotinidase deficiency, a genetic disorder, can also impair biotin recycling. 

Long-term use of anticonvulsant medications, gastrointestinal disorders that affect nutrient absorption (like Crohn's disease), and prolonged parenteral nutrition without biotin supplementation can also cause deficiency. Symptoms include hair loss, skin rashes, and neurological issues. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are at higher risk due to increased biotin requirements.


What to Do About Biotin Deficiency?

It's essential to identify and manage the underlying cause of Biotin deficiency. Dietary adjustments can help, such as increasing the intake of biotin-rich foods like eggs, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens. For those with absorption issues or genetic conditions affecting biotin metabolism, biotin supplements may be necessary. 

In cases of severe deficiency, a higher dose of biotin may be required. Monitoring and managing any contributing factors, such as medication use, are also crucial.
