What is Tansy Ragwort? (Environmental Toxin - Flowers, Shrubs & Trees)

What is Tansy Ragwort and where is it found?

Tansy ragwort (Senecio jacobaea) is a tall plant with bright yellow flowers, native to Europe and Asia but invasive in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Common in pastures and roadsides, it spreads quickly and is toxic to livestock, making it a noxious weed.

Why do I have an inflammatory reaction to Tansy Ragwort?

An inflammatory reaction to tansy ragwort is likely due to a sensitivity to its pollen, which can cause respiratory symptoms like sneezing, itchy eyes, and congestion. Additionally, tansy ragwort contains toxic compounds called pyrrolizidine alkaloids, which can cause skin irritation or rashes in sensitive individuals if touched.

What can I do about it?

Stay away from areas with tansy ragwort, especially during its bloom when pollen levels are high. If you’re near or handling the plant, use gloves and long sleeves to avoid skin contact. Wash your skin with soap and water if you come into contact with the plant to remove any irritants.
