What is Trespe or Bromus and where is it found?
Trespe, or Bromus (brome grass), is a genus of grasses with around 160 species found in temperate regions worldwide, including North America, Europe, and Asia. These tall grasses with feathery flower clusters grow in fields, grasslands, and roadsides and can be invasive, often competing with native plants.
Why do I have an inflammatory reaction to Trespe?
An inflammatory reaction to trespe (Bromus species) is likely due to a sensitivity to its pollen, which becomes airborne and can trigger respiratory symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes in sensitive individuals. Trespe pollen, similar to other grass pollens, is a common allergen, especially in late spring and summer when these grasses pollinate. Additionally, direct contact with the plant may cause skin irritation in people with grass sensitivities.
What can I do about it?
Avoid areas with trespe grass, especially during its pollen season in late spring and summer. Rinse your nasal passages and wash your face after exposure to remove pollen particles. If you’re in an area with trespe, wear long sleeves and gloves to avoid skin contact.
